In the western perspective , a symptom is treated as an individual problem with a particular drug .  These drugs often contain harsh chemicals that might produce severe side effects.  In contrast,  traditional Chinese medicine views the body holistically, which enables a diagnosis unique to each individual .  This method allows the resolution of the root cause as well as the symptom.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, organ systems are grouped as Yin and Yang pairings.  For example, the Spleen system is paired with the Stomach.  The function of the Spleen system is to transform food and water into qi for the body and to remove dampness. When the Spleen is out of balance once of the results is weight gain.  Sometimes , Spleen deficiency explains why when people eat salad and drink plenty of water, they still cannot lose weight due to excess dampness.  Another type of weight gain is caused by emotions that are also directly connected to the Spleen, such as worry and overthinking.  The principle sign of dampness is heaviness that includes fatigue and depression.  This explains why "emotional eaters" tend to eat ans gain weight.
